Green Tea that we use in tea ceremony is powder of the best part of Tea leaves. Tea powder was brought back by a Japanese monk who returned from Chaina and spread out fast as medication to clear your mind. From the beginning , it was related to meditation and something secret.

First spread trough Samurais. Tea ceremony accompanied many battle fields to encourage the established Samurai Lords. I have a video about it if you would like to know more.

WABI SABI

At that point, tea ceremony was organised simply outside on a small Tatami without protocole of today. As it was mostly practiced by Samurai Kings and very wealthy Japanese, tea ceremony became a status symbol of academics.

In 16th century, Sen no Rikyu became a Tea Master by his creative WABI SABI ethtetics. He is a real genius who found this ethtetic niche in minimalism and simplest objects or beings. Many of his teaching still today are valid.

My Experience

I was very lucky to learn from Tea master who is a descendant of Sen no Rikyu and my family practised at home as well. The first time I went into the tea ceremony room was when I was 3-4 years old. It was to eat sweets at the end of practice at my grand parents’.

The protocols of tea ceremony differs depending of the tea house and there are many different versions, even though the main idea remains the same. Any many events are organised. Sometimes, it is not easy even to get tickets if you are not from the same tea house, but big events are open and you just need to know someone or ask directly to the tea house if there is any events that “a total beginner“ can participate.

Through The Gate

Tea Ceremony starts by an invitation. Guests receive a Japanese traditional letter.

Typical Tea Ceremony starts at noon. Guests must be there not too early but never late. Change your shoes to a pair of Zouri to enter the tea garden.

At the beginning of tea garden, there will be a gate, that is a border between daily life and the world of Tea ceremony. Often the garden is covered by moss and low bushes. Host keeps garden tidy but natural.

The Bench

Moment of calm to enjoy the view of garden from the bench.

Often the ponds in the tea garden are KareSansui, which has a river but no water in it. Guest will sit on the bench till the host comes out from tea room to greet them.

When the host appears, the guest must stand and stand on the milestones to lower themselves to greet.

Purification

Before entering the small door,

After the host goes back into the tea room, guest can start walking towards water basin to clean their hands and mouth. This gesture is symbol to purify your daily life and busy mind in order to enjoy the moment of calmness and meditation during the tea ceremony.
